Current Situation in Thailand
The Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo wishes to provide further information on the latest development of political situation in Thailand after the implementation of the three-step roadmap of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).
Thailand is now entering the second stage of the roadmap, the reform period. On 25 August, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, the Head of NCPO, has been appointed as the new Prime Minister. On 30 August, His Majesty the King has the Royal command to appoint the 32-member Cabinet. The new government will make a policy statement in the National Legislative Assembly on 12 September. After that, national administration under the new government will begin in order to move the country forwards. As for the roles of the government and the NCPO, General Prayuth reiterated that they would be careful not to interfere each other’s duties and responsibilities by engaging close consultations.
Simultaneously, Thailand is in the process of establishing the National Reform Council whose duties is to undertake reform measures in order to create rightness and justice in the Thai society. The National Reform Council will also provide suggestions and recommendations to the Drafting Committee for drafting a new Constitution. After the new Constitution enters into force, Thailand will have general elections under the truly democratic system by October 2015.
The NPCO has solved several problems affecting the well-being of people and is now re-arranging the society by imposing transparency based on laws and regulations. The performance of the NPCO is warmly welcomed by the Thai people and businessmen. It helps create the stability in the country which is very important to wealth and prosperity of the Thai people. At present,the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand has increased. Foreign investors have more trust and confidence in Thailand.
