The Royal Kathina Ceremony is an initiative of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote Buddhism and its customs, and to enhance relations between Thailand and other Buddhist countries, both at governmental and people-to-people levels, based on their shared faith in Buddhism. The Royal Kathina Offering Ceremony in Sri Lanka started in the year 1996. This year’s event is 20th ceremony held in Sri Lanka, and the first time at Rajaguru Sri Subhuti Maha Viharaya, Waskaduwa. This temple is known for having a strong tie with the Thai royal family, as Prince Prisdang Chumsai was ordained by Venerable Subhuti at this temple in the year 1896.
