On 14 September 2012 H.E. Mr. Poldej Worachat, Ambassador of Thailand to Sri Lanka, attended the Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka – Thailand Society at the Sasakawa Memorial Cultural Centre, Colombo. Ambassador Worachat received a warm welcome from Mrs. Nirmalie Gunatilleke, President of the Sri Lanka – Thailand Society, as well as approximately 40 members of the Society who attended the meeting.

Mrs. Nirmalie Gunatillake was re-elected as the Society’s president for 7th consecutive term. Members of the new executive committee were also elected. There was a report on the accomplishment of the Society during the last year, including the donation of 100,000 Rupees towards Thai flood relief, religious ceremony to invoke blessings on H.M. the King of Thailand on his 84th birthday anniversary, religious and cultural tour to Yapahuwa and Kaikawala temple, and the essay competition in the title “Contribution of Upali Maha Thera of Ayutthaya in the Revival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka”.

The Sri Lanka – Thailand Society was founded in 1997. At present, there are approximately 180 members carrying out activities to strengthen Thai – Sri Lankan cultural relations in close co-operation with the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo. Atmosphere of the meeting was warm and cordial.
