On 15 October 2016, H.E. Maithripala Sirisena, President of Sri Lanka, and Honourable Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, visited the residence of Thai Ambassador to Sri Lanka to sign the book of condolences for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej who passed away on 13 October 2016. H.E President Sirisena wrote on behalf of the government and people of Sri Lanka to convey his deep sympathy to the Royal family, the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand. The Sri Lankan people mourn together with the Thai people on the loss of their beloved King. H.E. President Sirisena recalled with deep appreciation the invaluable contribution that His Majesty King Bhumibol made to strengthen the relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand. H.E. President Sirisena also observed a minute of silence in memory of His Majesty the King.
Honourable Prime Minister Wickremesinghe rendered his deepest sympathy to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, His Royal Highness Crown Prince and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess of the Kingdom of Thailand, the Government, and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand. Honourable Prime Minister Wickremesinghe wrote that “this is a sad moment for us in Sri Lanka” and emphasized that His Majesty’s contribution to the rapid development of Thailand and its people cannot be forgotten. Honourable Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also stood in silence in memory of His Majesty the King.
On this occasion, His Excellency Mr. Esala Weerakoon, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Mr. M Rizvi Hassen, Chief of Protocol, and Mr. Ameer Ajwad, Director-General of East Asia and the Pacific Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, also paid respect to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej by writing condolences messages in the book of condolences.
