The 90-year-old Kuruwita Abayawardena is renowned for his paintings, which draw inspiration from village life and his personal experiences in Kuruwita—a small village by a stream at the foothills of Sri Pada in Ratnapura. His work intricately captures the cultural and natural landscapes of Sri Lanka, vividly portraying the Sri Pada mountains, tea plantations, rice fields, local festivities, and daily life in remarkable detail.
His self-titled exhibition, “Abayawadana,” marks his first solo show in Colombo. Currently on display at Siam Nivasa (43, Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara Mawatha, Colombo 7), it runs until March 31, 2025.
Admission is free. The Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo has provided the exhibition space to promote cultural exchange, and all proceeds from art sales will go directly to the artist.
