On 8 August 2019, the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo together with Embassies and High Commission of the ASEAN member states in Colombo, comprising of Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and VietNam, organized an ASEAN Day Celebration at the chancery of the Indonesian Embassy in Colombo. Ambassador Chulamanee Chartsuwan and her spouse, along with officials from the Royal Thai Embassy participated in the event, which include a variety of activities such as the flag raising ceremony, the playing of ASEAN anthem, group photos among ASEAN officials and with officials from dialogue partner countries, and a reception.
After the completion of the flag raising ceremony, Ambassador Chulamanee Chartsuwan delivered a remark emphasizing the role of Thailand as Chair of ASEAN in 2019. She also elaborated developments of ASEAN from the inception to present, which had achieved many milestones. In particular, Thailand has recently hosted the ASEAN Foreign Minister Meeting and related meetings. In addition, ASEAN has endorsed the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, a document which reflects the role of ASEAN in the determination of future direction of the region. After the speech, Mr. Ravinatha Aryasinha, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, delivered a remark, recounting the historical linkage between Sri Lanka and various ASEAN countries, and expressing the desire of the Sri Lankan government to elevate the level of interaction with ASEAN in the future.
In addition to the ASEAN Day celebration, the ASEAN missions in Colombo also organized an ASEAN Film Festival 2019 during 9-11 August 2019 at the cinema hall of the National Film Corporation. Thai film titled “A Gift” was screened on 9 August 2019, after the reception to officially open the film festival.
