On 1 August 2012, H.E. Mr. Poldej Worachat, Ambassador of Thailand toSri Lanka, spouse and staffs of the Royal Thai paid a courtesy call on Dr. D. S. A. Wijesundara, Director of theRoyalBotanical Garden, Peradeniya.
TheRoyalBotanical Garden, Peradeniya, was founded in 1750. It is considered to be one of the oldest and most important botanical gardens in the world covering the area of 147 acres. The conservation of thousands of rare species of plants and flowers has been carried out by the botanical garden, including the task of reproducing the saplings of the sacred ancient Sri Maha Bodhi ofAnuradhapura.
Ambassador Poldej Worachat was shown the site where the commemorative tree was planted by H. R. H. Princess Chulabhorn of Thailand who paid a royal visit to the Royal Botabical Garden, Peradeniya, on 27 August 2012.
Moreover, the RoyalBotabicalGarden, Peradeniya, is the place where “Orchid Phalaenopsis Princess Chulabhorn, which is a hybrid between ‘Phalaenopsis Rose Miva’ and ‘Phalaenopsis Kandy Queen’ was bred. The orchid was named after H. R. H. Princess Chulabhorn and was presented to H. R. H. Princess Chulabhorn in August 1999. The orchid has white flower with pink tip with soft sweet scent.
