On 26 November 2012, H.E. Mr. Poldej Worachat, Ambassador of Thailand to Sri Lanka, attended the ceremony to inaugurate the new Upostha (Ordination Hall) at Asgiri Gedige Temple in Kandy. The Ordination Hall was built by a group of Thai Buddhist philanthropists led by Ajarn Yupa Aramkul, with cooperation of Irawaddy Travel International Co. Ltd.
The Maha Nayake of Asgiri Chapter of Siam Maha Nikaya of Sri Lanka presided over the Buddhist religious ceremony. Around 250 Thai and Sri Lankan Buddhists attended the event. The ordination of a new Buddhist monk was organized to celebrate such an auspicious occasion.
Asgiri Gedige Temple is important to Thai-Sri Lanka religious relations since Upali Maha Thero of Ayutthaya passed away at the site of this temple and was cremated there. Upali Maha Thero is well respected by Sri Lankans because he was the one who re-establish the high ordination of Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka, thus the establishment of the Siam Maha Nikaya of Sri Lanka 259 years ago There is a statue of Upali Maha Thero and a stone pillar to commemorate his devotion to Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the temple’s premises.
